BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, develops and maintains standards in educational qualifications that provide an appropriate foundation for those who wish to follow a career in computing or information systems. As part of this responsibility, BCS undertakes a programme of visits to Universities and other Higher Education Institutions to review computing courses, including computer science.
For engineering, the IET grants Chartered Engineer and Incorporated Engineer professional designations on behalf of the Engineering Council United Kingdom (ECUK). It is the mission of the ECUK to set and maintain realistic and internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics for:
Chartered Engineer (CEng)
Chartered Engineers are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They may develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques and marketing and construction concepts, and pioneer new engineering services and management methods. Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills. For many individuals, obtaining a professional engineering qualification is important in achieving recognition of professional knowledge and experience. Registering as a Chartered Engineer demonstrates that you have reached the benchmark set by the Engineering Council (UK).
Incorporated Engineers (IEng)
Incorporated Engineers are characterised by their ability to act as exponents of today's technology through creativity and innovation. To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. Incorporated Engineers are engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills.
Engineering Program Accreditation:
A panel of trained Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) experts visit a department to examine a wide range of issues including programme content, delivery and resources to ensure that the requirements have been met. Accreditation is awarded to individual programmes leading towards either Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer registration. Universities/Colleges are required to demonstrate that they meet the criteria set by the IET, which based on UK-SPEC. The IET endeavours to operate a transparent process, and the IET accreditation staff are available to give advice at any stage of the process.
