Accreditation Process:
The Council of Engineers Act of 1999 established the Council of Engineers of Thailand. Its purpose is to be the private organization, run by elected engineers, to oversee professional engineering license activities after almost 40 years of
governmental control. Professional engineers in 5 major fields including, civil, mechanical, electrical, industrial, and mining, are required to be registered with the COE and obtain professional engineers licenses. The COE established a Board
of Engineering Accreditation to evaluate engineering educational programs in Thailand.
Academic institutions that apply for an engineering educational accreditation are required to prepare a Self-study Report which is provided to the Board of Engineering Accreditation (BEA) of the Council of Engineering. After an academic institution has submitted the Self-study Report to the board for evaluation, a subcommittee is appointed to review the report and evaluate the program. They may offer some advice regarding suggested adjustments or corrections prior to the subcommittee appointment to provide technical visit of the institution. The subcommittee then proposes and gives some recommendations to the institution that might satisfy accreditation requirements. In final stage of the process, the subcommittee would make recommendation to the Council of Engineers for approval.
The Thailand Ministry of University Affairs supervises 65 institutions of higher learning, including 24 public and 41 private, with an overall enrollment of one million students and around fifty thousand faculty and administrative staff. Of the teaching staff at these institutions, 27.4 percent have PhD degrees and 53.5 percent have Masters degrees. Thirty-six of these 65 universities have colleges or faculties of engineering granting about 10,000 engineering degrees annually.
