Accreditation Process:
The Engineering Council of South Africa is empowered by the Engineering Profession of South Africa Act,
1990 to conduct "Accreditation Investigations" (visits) at educational institutions to determine whether
the engineering qualifications offered can be recognized by the Council for purposes of registration.
These visits are conducted on invitation and with the full co‐operation of Universities and Technikons.
The Council also has the power to prescribe its own examinations, either oral or written, which can be
conducted by ECSA itself or externally through Universities or Technikons. Degrees are accredited on a
five year cycle. There are two committees who oversee two separate program levels: University
Accreditation Committee (UAC) and the Technikon Accreditation Committee (TAC). South Africa is a
signatory to the Washington Accord, the Dublin Accord, and the Sidney Accord.

South Africa has also been admitted as a signatory to the Washington Accord. This is viewed by ESCA as a most significant development for South Africa as "the decision of the Washington Accord countries confirms that those engineering degree programs in South Africa that have been accredited by ECSA are recognized as meeting international standards, and are accepted by the engineering accreditation bodies of the other signatory countries."
