Accreditation Process:
The Project on Accreditation of Engineering Education Programs was initiated in 2003 by the Advisory Office of the Ministry of Education (MOE). The primary goal was to upgrade quality of engineering education in Taiwan through an internationalized quality assurance system. In many advanced countries, the bulk of this work is done through an accreditation system on engineering education.

The accreditation system is to assure the constituencies of engineering programs, namely students, parents, industry, etc., that a program meets the quality standard established by the profession for which it prepares its students. In the first year of this project, together with several engineering school deans and university president, the Advisory Office of the MOE supported the establishment of the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) in 2003 as a non-profit, non-government organization dedicated to the development and improvement of an accreditation system. IEET is registered as a non-governmental, not-for-profit organization with the Ministry of the Interior.

In fall of 2004, the first ever cycle of accreditation of engineering programs was launched, and the IEET accredited twelve programs at four institutions. In the meantime, IEET has worked to build a solid relationship with its counterparts in
foreign countries through the Washington Accord (WA). WA is a member organization with the mission to recognize mutually substantial equivalent accreditation systems in different countries. Since the beginning, IEET strives to become a signatory of the WA so engineering education in Taiwan could align with that in other countries.

After the accreditation system was developed and successfully launched, the focus of the project has been to strengthen the capacity of the accreditation system with the goal to upkeep the sustainability of the accreditation system. Since June of
2005, the IEET has become a Provisional Signatory of the Washington Accord, which is a first step of the IEET accreditation system to be aligned with the international standard.

As of today, IEET has nearly 200 individual members and over 20 group members, including the numerous higher education institutions and engineering and technology programs. In addition, major professional societies agreeing to support the mission of IEET and participating actively include: Chinese Institute of Engineers, Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, The Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers, Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineers, Chinese Institute of Chemical Engineers, Aeronautical and Astronautical Society of the Republic of China, and Institute of Information and Computing Machinery, with the list still growing.
