Accreditation Process:
Engineering programs are accredited in Belgium by NVAO, the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders, on the basis of an external review by a commission of experts. The commissions evaluate the quality of the programs within the accreditation frameworks and the (international) domain specific requirements.

As accreditation is new in Belgium, all engineering programs in universities and university colleges have obtained a provisional accreditation. The external evaluation of these programs will begin in 2008. This external evaluation will form the basis for the future formal accreditation application.

The main objective of external evaluations is to assist institutions with their proposals for enhancing quality. External evaluations involve the analysis of the characteristics and development of university institutions in relation to their mission and objectives. These evaluations will be conducted every six years at a minimum. They are complementary to self-evaluations performed by the institutions in the analysis of their own achievements and difficulties. External evaluation reports are public in nature.

NVAO participates in a research project concerning the attribution of a European label to programmes in engineering (EUR-ACE), in the introduction of an accreditation system in Tunisia (EvaFor), and in European research on the application of subject-/discipline-specific descriptors for accreditation (Tuning).
