Accreditation Process:
Full details are at www.ipenz.org.nz/ipenz/Education_Career/accreditation. But, in summary, The Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ) accredits engineering programs as meeting internationally benchmarked standards. They recognize four year engineering degrees. The degree title for all four year programs is Bachelor of Engineering (abbreviated as BE) or Bachelor of Engineering with Honors (abbreviated as BE(Hons)). Three year engineering technology (BEngTech) degrees are also accredited by IPENZ, and are recognized as meeting the initial academic requirements for Engineering Technologists.

Through international agreements, IPENZ accredited engineering qualifications are recognized in many other countries thereby giving graduates international portability. IPENZ is a signatory to both the Sydney Accord (www.ieagreements.com/Sydney/Rules.cfm ) and the Washington Accords (www.washingtonaccord.org ). New programs may be granted provisional accreditation until a representative group of graduates has emerged to enable full accreditation to be considered. Provisional accreditation indicates that full accreditation is expected, but not guaranteed.

Four Year Engineering Degrees
Four year engineering degrees accredited by IPENZ are recognized as meeting the initial academic requirements for professional engineers. IPENZ is a founding signatory to the Washington Accord, which was signed in 1988. This agreement ensures that all engineering degrees accredited by any of the signatories are recognized as being substantially equivalent by all of the signatories. The other signatories to the Agreement are professional engineering bodies in Australia, USA, Canada, Hong Kong-China, Singapore, South Africa, United Kingdom, Ireland and Japan. A set of rules and procedures underpins the operation of The Washington Accord. Individual accord signatories give credit for IPENZ accredited degrees gained prior to 1998 at their own discretion.

Three Year Engineering Technology Degrees
Three year engineering technology (BEngTech) degrees accredited by IPENZ are recognized as meeting the initial academic requirements for Engineering Technologists. IPENZ is a founding signatory to the Sydney Accord signed in 2001. This agreement ensures that all engineering technology degrees accredited by any of the signatories will be recognized as being substantially equivalent by all of the signatories. The other signatories to the agreement are engineering bodies in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong-China, South Africa, United Kingdom and Ireland.
